  • 1 cup lukewarm Milk
  • 1 cake compressed Yeast
  • ½ pound sifted Pastry Flour
  • ½ cup Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 cups Bran
  • ½ cup Raisins
  • ½ cup dried Currants
  • ½ cup Walnuts (chopped)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
How to make Bran Cake:
  • Dissolve the yeast in warm milk.
  • Gradually add flour, whisking to mix well. Keep it in a warm place to rise.
  • Boil the raisins and currants in little water for 1 minute and drain.
  • Whisk together shortening and sugar until creamy.
  • Beat in the egg until stiff. Add this mixture to flour mixture and whisk to uniformly combine.
  • Stir in the raisins, currants, and nuts and pour into a buttered pan.
  • Keep at a warm place to rise about ½-inch and bake for 55-60 minutes in an oven at 350 degree F.
