  • 2½ cups sifted Cake Flour
  • ½ cup Unsweetened Cocoa
  • 1½ tsp Baking Soda
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Vinegar
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 cup Vegetable Shortening
  • 1½ cups Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • ½ cup Hot Water
  • 1 tsp Vanilla

    For Burnt Sugar Frosting:
  • ¼ cup Unsalted Butter
  • 300 gm Powdered Sugar
  • Pinch of Salt
  • ¼ cup Burnt Sugar Syrup
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
How to make Burnt Sugar Cake:
  • Prepare burnt sugar frosting by whisking together entire ingredients for frosting in a bowl, until creamy, smooth and spreadable. Add little water if required.
  • Grease 3 (8x2-inch) cake pans and dust with flour.
  • Combine together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.
  • Combine milk with vinegar in a seperate bowl and leave it for 5 minutes.
  • Whisk together shortening, sugar and eggs with an electric mixture at high speed for 3 minutes.
  • Stir in flour mixture alternating with milk mixture, beating frequently until a smooth batter is formed.
  • Mix in hot water & vanilla to the batter and pour into the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes. Cool in the oven for 10 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and loosen the edges. Reverse and pour burnt sugar frosting over each piece, reserving a little.
  • Arrange one layer above another and frost with remaining frosting.
  • Slice and serve.
