University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo was founded in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. Today, University of Tokyo is one of the leading universities of the world. History
  • The university was founded in 1886 n the name of Tokyo Daigaku with just four departments: Law, Science, Medicine and Literature.
  • Later, three other institutions were included in the university. These include Shoheiko (Japanese and Chinese Literature, established 1789), Yogakusho (occidental Studies, established 1855) and Shutosho (Vaccinations, established 1860)
  • In 1886, the name of Tokyo Daigaku (Tokyo University) changed to Teikoku Daigaku (Imperial University).
  • In 1955, the Institute for Nuclear Studies was established.
  • In 2002, Professor Emeritus Masatoshi Koshiba was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Undergraduate Schools
Different undergraduate level courses are available in various departments. The participating departments include College of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Economics, and Faculty of Letters.

Graduate Schools
Various graduate programs are available in different graduate schools including Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, Graduate School of Public Policy, Graduate School of Medical Science, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, etc.

Admission Details
The university has strict screening procedures both for Japanese as well as international students. For undergraduate programs, the applicant has to complete 12-years of formal school and should be of 18 years age. The applicant also has to take certain tests in specified subjects. It is also mandatory for applicants to take Test of English Language (ToEFL) to apply in the University of Tokyo. To enrol in the graduate school for master or doctoral degree, an applicant needs to clear the entrance exam conducted by individual graduate schools. International students should have been enrolled continuously for over a year, including the final year, at an overseas school and should have graduated from the final school.
