  • It is advisable to go in for good quality materials and tools when working. You should not compromise with the quality of the tools since bad tools will not only deteriorate the quality of work but can also prove to be risky.
  • Store your tools in a safe place, away from the reach of children and pets. Keep them in the tool box in a specific place or in a locked cupboard.
  • Make it a point to switch off the power and remove the fuse before fixing or checking electrical connections. You can also put on your rubber shoes while working with electric appliances or repairing an electric connection.
  • Do not forget to disconnect electrical appliances before you start to repair them. Remove the plug from the main socket and also wear your rubber shoes when dealing with electrical appliances.
  • Keep a chemical fire extinguisher at home. Do not use water to put out a fire caused by electricity.
  • Use a drill that has a plastic body, as it will not conduct electricity. Remove the plug from the socket while fitting parts. Do not wear loose clothes or jewellery as these can get entangled in the drill.
  • There might be work for which may require you to climb a ladder. Read the instructions carefully before assembling a ladder, since ladders can often cause accidents. Do not lean on one side since you may lose balance.
  • It is advisable to plan work carefully. Make sure you do it yourself or hire a professional to do it. Do not be in a hurry to complete a job. It is best to ask someone to help you out.
  • If the job you are about to do involves the disposal of hazardous material then contact your local environmental health department for advice.
  • Make it a point to always keep a first aid kit near your area of work. A first aid kit makes a lot of difference between a quick recovery and a permanent injury.
