History
  • The foundations to this university were laid in 1495. This was when solicitor of Santiago de Compostela called López Gómez de Mazoa got help from an abbot of San Martiño Pinario and founded a school for the poor known as 'Gramatic Academy'. This school was located in the monastery of San Paio de Antealtares.
  • In 1504, Pope Julius II issued a Papal Bull recognizing this institution. The ultimate consolidation of the 'Gramatic Academy' came with Alonso III de Fonseca, in 1507. This was also the time when the old pilgrim's hospital was purchased with the aim of changing it into a university college.
  • The Santiago Alfeo College (today known as the Fonseca College) was also built during this time. During the 16th- 17th centuries, the San Patricio College or the College of the Irish was created.
  • Now during the tumultuous 18th century, the University of Santiago lost a part of its autonomy to the centralising forces of the Spanish Monarchy. By the beginning of the 20th century, this institute experienced a significant growth in the number of students as well as in careers, which also meant a significant growth in infrastructures.
  • The Hall of Residence was built in 1930. Now, the university has two campuses, Santiago and Lugo. It is obvious that with over 500 years of experience, the University of Santiago de Compostela gazes across a successful and secure future.
